CNN’s Betty Nguyen, the nation’s first Vietnamese-American network news anchor, will present the 26th annual Freedom of Information Congress March 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rose Theatre on the University of Memphis campus. She will speak about the state of journalism and address the various challenges that news media face today. The event is free and open to the public. For the last four years, Nguyen has been an anchor and reporter for CNN. She is the host of CNN Newsroom’s weekend edition and occasionally reports for Anderson Cooper 360º. In September 2005, she reported on the fleeing survivors of Hurricane Katrina in Houston, Texas, and covered the aftermath of deadly floods in Vietnam. Nguyen began her career as a morning anchor and reporter for the CBS affiliate KWTX in Waco, Texas. During her time there she received an Associated Press Award for spot news coverage. Before joining CNN, she was an anchor for KTVT in Dallas, also a CBS affiliate. There she reported on several breaking news events, including the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster and the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. She won a regional Emmy award for Outstanding Noon Newscast while at KTVT. Last year, the Smithsonian Institute recognized Nguyen as the first Vietnamese-American to anchor a national television news broadcast in the U.S. Nguyen received a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Texas. She is the co-founder of Help the Hungry, a non-profit organization that provides humanitarian aid to poverty-stricken families.
