The 'Sport, Commerce and Culture in the Global Marketplace' study abroad program will
be delivered during the Summer 2011 Full Summer session (June 6th - August 12th, 2011).
The program is intended to provide those advanced undergraduate and graduate students
who are interested in international business, globalization, popular culture, sport
and tourism, with first hand experience in, and a thorough understanding of, the rapidly
expanding global sport marketplace. Students are provided a comprehensive orientation
to traveling and living overseas, together with an extensive theoretical grounding
for such academic study, prior to their departure. This will be the twelfth such study
abroad program offered by the department in the last twelve years and the eleventh
in London.
The two week study abroad component (July 10th through July 23rd, 2011) will be preceded
by web delivery of readings, preparatory assignments and online discussion groups.
The study abroad program will be based at The University of Roehampton, in southwest
London, and will include:
- Formal lectures delivered by the primary and secondary trip leaders as well as prominent
guest scholars from European universities;
- Lectures from leading global sport executives along with daily field visits to multinational
sporting enterprises (e.g., F.A. Premier League, Wimbledon, Sky Sports, Octagon, Coca-Cola,
Visa, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Rugby Football Union, and Lords Cricket Ground)
for 'behind the scenes' tours;
- Small group/individual tutorials. Following the conclusion of the London-based program,
students will be expected to complete culminating assignments.
Program costs include bed and breakfast, single accommodation for 13 nights at The
University of Roehampton, closing dinner, daily lectures, 14 days of unlimited travel
on London Transport (underground, buses and boats), admission and tours to sporting
enterprises throughout London, an international Student I.D. Card, and six credit
hours of tuition at The University of Memphis. Program participants are expected to
make their own travel arrangements to The University of Roehampton.

Accommodation will be provided in an award winning and purpose built, handicapped
accessible hall of residence opened in 1997. It is located on an attractive wooded,
suburban campus that provides 24 hour gated access and security. Single rooms are
provided for all participants with shared showers, bathrooms, telephone, laundry facilities,
and kitchenette area. Linen will be furnished. Breakfast will be provided daily with
full access provided to SMART classrooms, recreational facilities, and the internet.
Transportation within London will be via London Transport (underground, buses, and
boats). Program participants will be provided a 14 day pass for unlimited travel throughout
London.
