Engineering Internship Opportunity in China
An international internship gives you the opportunity to gain professional experience
and or earn academic credit in your major. To intern abroad you will need to work
with your major/minor department, Career Services, the University Internship Program,
and the Study Abroad Office.
Placement: The Nanjing Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspection Institute (NJBPVII) in Nanjing,
Jiangsu Province, China.
Eligibility and Availability: This program is sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Department and is open to
all engineering majors with junior or senior standing. Preference will be given to
students with technical background who will be able to be trained in acoustic emission
technology within a week. Ability to speak or write Chinese is not required.
Program Dates: Spring semester or summer. Dates will be determined in consultation with NJBPVII.
Important: Medical conditions which require special medical care must be disclosed.
Academics: Students interested in obtaining academic credits for this internship will need to
consult with the undergraduate advisor for their major. The faculty contact person
for this internship is Dr. Gary Qi (gangqi@memphis.edu), Associate Professor, Mechanical
Engineering (678-3437). Please note that if you choose to enroll in an internship
course for credits you will need to pay course fees for the class.
Program Cost: This is a paid internship opportunity. Students will be required to pay the Study
Abroad Application fee of $350 to the Study Abroad Office. The study abroad application
fee is non-refundable. NJBPVII will provide the selected applicant with a round trip
airfare, a monthly stipend of CNY 800-1,000) and accommodations.

Application Process: Interested students should submit a CV and a cover letter to Dr. Gary Qi, Department
of Mechanical Engineering, 320 Engineering Science Building. Once selected for the
internship you will be required to complete the Study Abroad application form and
pay the $350 application fee.
Other Information: Students applying for this internship should also consider applying for the Alliance for Global Education's summer engineering program. The program will be based at Fudan University. Students
applying for the Alliance program may also apply for a Gilman Scholarship. Gilman
will award 125 scholarships to science, technology, engineering or math majors to
study abroad during the summer of 2010.
