Faculty Program Director: Dr. Robin Roach, Professor and Interim Chair, Department of Health and Sport Sciences at the University of Memphis will lead the program to Switzerland.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to upper division undergraduate and graduate level students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university.

Credit: Participants may opt to enroll in 3 credit hours of NUTR 4902/6902 or HMSE 4999.

Deadline: February 1, 2009 (Applications will be accepted after February 1, 2009 if there are spots available).

Housing and Board: Participants will stay in double occupancy rooms. Daily breakfast and some meals are included in the program fees. All sightseeing fees, entrance fees to tour sites, and transportation fees during the tour are also included.

Travel Arrangements: The Study abroad office will assist students in making all travel arrangements for the group to Switzerland. Students will need a valid U.S. passport. If you do not have a passport, apply as soon as possible. Issuance requires between four and six weeks. You may also pay an additional fee to get your passport issued within two weeks. The passport application can be downloaded at http://travel.state.gov

Important: Medical conditions which require special medical care must be disclosed. Participants should be in good medical condition and be able to cope with long walks and high altitudes.

Program Description: This study abroad program focuses on global health issues impacted by diet and health promotion practices. Our learning environment will include the World Health Organization headquarters and the United Nations Office in Geneva. Lectures will include presentations by experts from the Swiss Association of Nutritionists as well as representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. 

Tentative Program Schedule

Day 1:
Depart Memphis to Zurich, Switzerland

Day 2: Arrival at Zurich Airport
Transfer by private bus from the airport to your hotel in Engelberg
10 nights in twin bedded rooms with shared bathrooms including daily breakfast
Walking tour of Engelberg and guided tour of Engelberg Monastery
Welcome reception and dinner

Day 3: Engelberg
Breakfast at the hotel
Lecture: The Swiss Health Care Model by representative of the Swiss Association of Nutritionists.
Hiking tour in afternoon with a visit to a traditional mountain cabin

Day 4: Lucerne - Seelisburg
Breakfast at the hotel
Transfer by private bus during the day
Guided tour of Lucerne
Lunch at own expense
Visit of the dairy Ascwanden in Seelisburg

Day 5: (Engelberg)
Breakfast at the hotel
Full day Cooking and Service seminar with the Chef of Hotel Europe
Lunch and Dinner at Hotel Europe, where you eat what you have prepared during the seminar

Day 6: Geneva
Breakfast at the hotel
Visit to the United nations Office at Geneva
Visit to the World Health Organization or the International Committee of Red Cross and afterwards a visit to the Red Crescent Museum at own leisure
Free time to explore Geneva at own leisure
return to Engelberg

Day 7: Vevey - Montreux
Breakfast at the hotel
Transfer by private bus
Guided tour of permanent exhibition at the food museum Alimentarium in Vevey in the morning: Cooking, Eating, Purchasing and Digesting.
Free time to explore Montreux on Lac Leman
Guided tour of Chateau Chillon on Lac Leman

Day 8: Engelberg
Breakfast at the hotel
Lecture
Free time to explore Engelberg

Day 9: Engelberg
Breakfast at the hotel
Full day introduction to Yoga (seminar of theory and praxis)
Traditional Swiss Dinner: Alpermaggronen at a 300 year old mountain cabin. You will travel by bus and then walk back to the hotel after dinner by traditional torch light.

Day 10: Aargau Canton
Breakfast at the hotel
Transfer by private bus
Visit  to one or two spa towns in the Aargau region including two company visits
Guided tour of Swiss brewery Feldschlosschen in Rheinfeld in the afternoon
Dinner at Hotel Europe

Day 11: Lucerne Region
Breakfast at the hotel
Lecture
Visit to an organic farm in the Lucerne region; tour of farm including guest lecture on the nutritional value of organically grown foods.
Free time at Lucerne

Day 12: Engelberg - Lucerne - Zurich
Breakfast at the hotel
Transfer by private bus
Visit to Bachmann Bakery in Lucerne to learn about Swiss pastries
Afternoon visit to a company
Transfer to Zurich
Free time in Zurich for sight seeing

Day 13:
Zurich
Breakfast at the hotel
Transfer by private bus
Guest lecture on Ayurveda at a medical practice near Zurich
Visit to Symetris Pilates in the afternoon to learn more about Pilates and practice with a trainer
Farewell Dinner at a restaurant in Zurich

Day 14: Zurich
Breakfast at the hotel
Transfer by private bus to the airport in Zurich
Departure from Zurich airport

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $3,625 (for undergraduates) and $3,925 (for graduate students) and includes 3 credit hours tuition, in-country travel, double room hotel accommodations, student ID card, breakfast, and some meals and entrance fees to museums and other institutions. The program fees do not include personal expenses, airfare some meals and medical insurance. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by February 1, 2009 to secure your place. Payment should be made at the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall.

The program fees are to be paid according to this schedule:

February 1, 2009: $600
March 1, 2009: $1,200
April 1, 2009: 875
May 1: Final payment

Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a non-refundable deposit of 25% of the program fee. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.
