Salvador, Brazil: August 2 - 11, 2010

3 credits in Afro-Brazilian Hisotry and Culture are available at the undergraduate or graduate level. Course number is TBA.

Faculty/Program Leader: Dr. Dennis Laumann, Associate Professor of the Department of History will lead the trip to Brazil.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to undergraduate students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university.

Program Description: Students will learn about the history and culture of Afro-Brazilians through a 10-day trip to Salvador, Brazil, as part of a three-credit summer second session combined undergraduate/graduate course offered through the Department of History.

Course Description: This course examines the history and cultures of Brazilians of African descent. It will begin with three weeks of class meetings at The University of Memphis for lectures and discussions based around assigned Readings. then the class will travel to Salvador, the capital of the Bahia state in Brazil, for ten days to visit historic sites, meet with Afro-Brazilian community groups and cultural organizations, and hear guest lectures from Brazilian specialists on the course theme. The course will end with a final exam and a concluding discussion back in Memphis. this course is reading-intensive and discussion-oriented and all participants are required to complete all assignments and actively participate in all activities.

Tentative Itinerary:

August 2:

  • Departure for arrival in Salvador, Brazil

August 3:

  • City tour in the morning

  • Evening lecture on Afro-Brazilian culture

August 4:

  • Visit to Capoeira center morning

  • Evening lecture on Capoeira

August 5:

  • Visit to Pierre Verge Foundation in morning

  • Afternoon visit to arts and music program in favela

August 6:

  • Visit with Candomble Sisterhood in morning

  • Evening lecture on Candomble

August 7:

  • Visit to a Terreiro center for Candomble in morning

  • Afternoon dance class

August 8:

  • Volunteer work with community group in morning

  • Afternoon drumming class

August 9:

  • Continue volunteer work

August 10:

  • Free day to explore Salvador

August 11:

  • Return to Memphis

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $2,175*. The program fee includes accommodations, student ID card and application fee.The program fees do not include international travel, tuition, visa fees, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by March 1, 2010 with submission of your application. Please submit you payment to the Study Abroad Office located at 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student, you can pay the deposit online here.


Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.
