Italian Summer School in Bologna

Undergraduate Credit (3-6): Students will earn a total of 6 credit hours.

Faculty Program Leader: Dr. Cosetta Gaudenzi, Associate Professor of Italian will lead the group to Bologna.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university. Prior language experience is not necessary. Space is limited to 12 participants only.

Program Description: The University of Bologna is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It is situated in the city of Bologna in the Emilia Romagna region.

Students will take a mandatory placement test and be placed at the appropriate course level. Courses last three weeks and lessons will be held Monday - Friday from 9:00am - 1:00pm. Particular attention will be paid to the understanding of written and spoken Italian as well as elements of grammar. These lessons are integrated with a program of afternoon cultural visits and activities. Additionally, there will be optional cultural outings and visits on the weekends. Last year's destinations were Venice, Ravenna, Rimini and Parma.

Housing and Board: Students will be housed in university-owned apartments, just a bus ride away from the campus. Each apartment is designed to host two people with the possibility of adding a third bed. Students will have access to the cafeteria at the University of Bologna with full menus available for 5.8 Euros. Meals are no included in the program fee.

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $1,800*. The program fee includes accommodations, tuition at the University of Bologna, course materials, some cultural activities and field trips, student ID card and application fee.The program fees do not include international travel, meals, domestic transportation, visa fees, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by March 1, 2011 to secure your place. Please submit you payment to the Study Abroad Office located at 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student, you can pay the deposit online here.

Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.

Additional Program Fee Policy for Non U of M or Non-Degree Seeking Applicants: Non-degree seeking students who are accepted to participate in a U of M program are required to pay a non-refundable fee of $500. This will be applied toward the total program fee. Full payment of your program fee is due two weeks prior to the official program start date. No arrangement can be made for deferred payment.
