China Study Tour

December 27, 2010 – January 8, 2011

Program Cost: $1,800*

Eligibility and Space Available: Students in good standing at the University of Memphis and non-UM students.

Course Credit:  3 credit hours available.

Undergraduates: Enroll in UNHP 4536 or ESCI 4306

Graduates: ESCI 6303

Program Description: Students will spend two weeks in China to learn Chinese language and culture (history, geography, government, economics) at Hubei University. Students will also conduct field studies, visit different cities and historical sites. This course provides an understanding of the people, history, culture, and government of a civilization that is over 5,000 years old. It will demonstrate the influence of ancient Chinese medicine, art, and religion have had on the contemporary world and illustrates the way in which China attempts to balance economic and political development with ancient customs, rituals, and beliefs.

Faculty Program Director: Dr. Hsiang Te Kung, Professor of Geography at the University of Memphis will lead the China Study Tour during the winter break.

Travel Arrangements: The Study Abroad Office will assist you in making your travel arrangements. You will need a valid U.S. passport and a visa for entry into China. If you do not have a passport, apply as soon as possible. Issuance requires between six and nine weeks. You may download a passport application at http://travel.state.gov

Important: Medical conditions which require special medical care must be disclosed. Participants should be in good medical condition and be able to cope with long walks.

Program Fees: The program fee is $1,800 and includes in-country travel, double room hotel accommodations and student ID cards. The program fee does not include international air travel, tuition, medical insurance, visa fees and personal expenses. Students who are interested in earning credits for this experience may pay tuition and enroll in UNHP 4536, ESCI 4306, or ESCI 6306 for 3 credits. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by October 1, 2010; full payment is due by December 1, 2010. Payment should be made at the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: Cancellations after November 1, 2010 will incur a non-refundable fee of $800. After December 1, 2010 the non-refundable fee will be $1,200. In addition to the above stated cancellation charges, if airline tickets have already been issued at the time of cancellation (regardless of number of days prior to departure), the traveler will be assessed an additional airline cancellation penalty fee and service charge pursuant to the airlines rules and regulations. If you are a U of M student, you can pay the deposit online here.

Additional Program Fee Policy for Non U of M or Non-Degree Seeking Applicants: Non-degree seeking students who are accepted to participate in a U of M program are required to pay a non-refundable fee of $500. This will be applied toward the total program fee. Full payment of your program fee is due two weeks prior to the official program start date. No arrangement can be made for deferred payment.

12/27 - Depart USA

12/28 - Arrival Shanghai

Meet at PVG airport, transfer to hotel: Shanghai Swan Hotel 3 star or similar

12/29: Shanghai - Suzhou (B L D)

Morning tour to the Bund, Yu Garden, Xiantiandi

Drive 1.5 hours to Suzhou,

Visit Kunqu Opera Museum and learn some basic skills

Hotel: Suzhou Hotel 4 star or similar

 

12/30: Suzhou - Nanjing (B L SD)

This morning drive 2 hours to Nanjing

Tour to Dr. Sun Yatsen’s Mausoleum

 Ancient City Wall & Confucius   Temple

Evening: taste Nanjing Cuisine – Salty Duck

Hotel: Nanjing New Century 4 star or similar

 

12/31: Nanjing - Wuhan by train (B L D)

Transfer and take train to Wuhan (3 hours/one way, soft seat)

Upon arrival, meet and transfer to hotel

Hotel: Holiday Inn Tian An 4 star or similar

 

01/01: Wuhan (B)

Hotel-Hubei University-hotel transfer

 

01/02 : Wuhan – Yichang – Wuhan (B L)

Tour: Wuhan-Yichang-Wuhan by bus (4 hours one way),

All day tour to the famous Three Gorges Dam with guide

 

01/03: Wuhan - Xian by air (B)

Free at leisure by your won this morning,

CITS bus transfer to airport for late afternoon flight e-tickets                     

upon arrival Xian, met and transfer to hotel

Hotel: Xian New Henderson 3 star or similar

 

01/04:  Xi’an (B L SD)

Terra-cotta Warriors Museum, Ancient City Wall

Evening: Dumpling Dinner & Tang Dynasty Show

                               

01/05:  Xi’an - Beijing (B L D)

Morning flight for Beijing

Upon arrival Beijing, met and transfer to hotel

Afternoon tour to Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City                    

Evening: Legend of Kung fu Show

Hotel: Beijing Holiday Inn Express Temple of Heaven 3.5 star or similar

 

01/06: Beijing (B L SD)

Great Wall, Jade Store, take photo at exterior of Bird Nest & Water Cube

Evening: Peking Roast Duck Dinner

 

01/07: Beijing (B L SD)

Morning tour to a local community,

Learn to make dumpling & lunch with local family

Afternoon tour to Temple of Heave

Evening: Brazil BBQ Dinner

 

01/08: Beijing - Home (B)

Transfer to airport for your flight home
