Winter Break in China

China Field Study – UNIV 4506

December 27, 2008 – January 12, 2009

Faculty Program Director: Dr. Hsiang Te Kung, Professor of Geography at the University of Memphis will lead the China Study Tour during the winter break.

Eligibility and Space Available: Students in good standing at the University of Memphis and non-UM students.

Credit: Participants may opt to enroll in 3 credit hours of Univ 4506.

Deadline: October 15, 2008

Housing and Board: Participants will stay in hotel rooms with double occupancy. Single rooms are available for an additional fee of $230. Breakfast is included in the tuition; some lunch and dinner will also be offered.

Travel Arrangements: The Study Abroad Office will make your travel arrangements. You will need a valid U.S. passport and a visa for entry into China. If you do not have a passport, apply as soon as possible. Issuance requires between six and nine weeks. You may download a passport application at http://travel.state.gov

Important: Medical conditions which require special medical care must be disclosed. Participants should be in good medical condition and be able to cope with long walks.

Program Description: This course will provide an understanding of the people, history, culture and government of a civilization more than 5,000 years old. The course will be taught as a field study course and will involve two weeks travel to Shanghai, Wuhan, Beijing, Hangzhou and Suzhou

Program Fees: The program fee is estimated at $3,500 and includes international airfare, in-country travel, double room hotel accommodations, student ID card, and some meals. The program fee does not include tuition, medical insurance, visa fees and personal expenses. Students who are interested in earning credits for this experience may pay tuition and enroll in Univ 4506 for 3 credits. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by October 15, 2008; full payment is due by December 15, 2008. Payment should be made at the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: Cancellations after November 15, 2008 will incur a non-refundable fee of $800. After December 12, 2008 the non-refundable fee will be $1,200. In addition to the above stated cancellation charges, if airline tickets have already been issued at the time of cancellation (regardless of number of days prior to departure), the traveler will be assessed an additional airline cancellation penalty fee and service charge pursuant to the airlines rules and regulations.

Scholarships: A limited number of scholarships for University of Memphis students with a GPA of 2.75 or higher is available through the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall phone: 678-4271. Applications may be downloaded at www.memphis.edu/abroad/scholarships/php

Arrive in Beijing, China
Check in to hotel.

Dec 29:            
Beijing                          
Visit the Great Wall and Ming Tomb. Peking Roast Duck Dinner.  

Dec 30:           
Beijing

Tour Tiananmen Square, Imperial Palace and Summer Palace
 
Travel to Xi’an by sleeper train.

Dec 31:            
Arrive in Xi’an and transfer to hotel
Visit the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang to view the astonishing army of the life sized terracotta warriors standing guard over the tomb for over $2,000 years. Tung Dynasty performance in the evening.

Morning tour of Ancient City Wall & Provincial Museum
Take evening flight for Wuhan

"Venice of China", visit Tiger Hill, Humble Administrator’s Garden and silk factory

Drive to Hangzhou, a city described as "Heaven on Earth" by travelers.
Visit the beautiful West Lake and Lingyin Temple

Jan 10:           
Hangzhou – Shanghai
Afternoon tour to the Bund
, the 16th century Yu Garden and Nanjing Road. In the evening, attend an Acrobatic Show

Jan 11:           

Shanghai
Morning tour to Shanghai Museum, afternoon free for your own exploration

Jan 12:           

Transfer to airport for return flight to Memphis
