Creative Writing&Teaching English as a Second Language in Alicante, Spain

Alicante, Spain - June 12 - June 29, 2011

3-6 credits are available at the undergraduate and graduate level in creative writing and/ or teaching English as a second language.

  • Undergraduates: ENGL 4533, ENGL 4610, and/or ENGL 3606

  • Graduates: ENGL 6533, ENGL 6610, and/or ENGL 7472

Program Cost: $1,500* for a double occupancy room or $1,675* for single a occupancy room.

Faculty Leader: Dr. John Bensko, Professor of the English Department, and Dr. Charles Hall, Associate Professor of the English Department will lead the trip to Alicante.

Program Description: Two U of M courses will taught in partnership with the University of Alicante in order to give U of M students the experience of studying and an overseas University with Spanish students. Students will study creative writing and the translation of creative works, and/or the teaching of a second language (students have the option of signing up for one or both courses offered). The interchange will allow students to gain from direct interactions with students from the other country, both inside and outside the classroom, and will give them opportunities for practical experience at teaching and writing in a second language.

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $1,500* or $1,675* depending on single or double occupancy rooms.The program fee includes accommodations and some meals, inland transportation, student ID card and application fee.The program fees do not include international travel, tuition, visa fees, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by March 1, 2011 to secure your place. Please submit you payment to the Study Abroad Office located at 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student, you can pay the deposit online here.

Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.

Additional Program Fee Policy for Non U of M or Non-Degree Seeking Applicants: Non-degree seeking students who are accepted to participate in a U of M program are required to pay a non-refundable fee of $500. This will be applied toward the total program fee. Full payment of your program fee is due two weeks prior to the official program start date. No arrangement can be made for deferred payment.
