Embark on a 3-week journey throughout Egypt!
May 15 - June 2, 2010

Faculty Program Leader: Dr. Peter Brand and Dr. Suzanne Onstine in the Department of History will lead the
students to Egypt.
Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to undergraduate and graduate level students from the University
of Memphis and any accredited public or private university.
Program Description: This trip is designed to serve both as an introduction to the monuments and museums
of Egypt for both undergraduate and graduate students of Egyptology as well as a major
research project centered around these ancient sources in Egypt.
Tentative Itinerary:
Day 1:
Day 2:
- Arrive in Cairo and transfer to Giza Hotel
Day 3:
- Free time
- Optional visit to Cairo Museum in the afternoon
- Evening visit to Khan-el-Kolili market & Medieval Cairo
- Overnight in Cairo
Day 4:
- Giza & Saqqara
- See Great Pyramid, sphinx and tombs of Giza
- See step pyramid at Saqqara.
- Overnight in Cairo
Day 5:
- Saqqara, Memphis, Dashur
- Visit official's tombs in Saqqara
- See site of ancient Memphis
- See pyramids of Dashur
- Overnight in Cairo
Day 6:
- Tanis, Ismailia & Port Said
- Bus trip to ruins of ancient city of Tanis north of Cairo
- Continue to visit archaeological museums in Ismailia & Port Said
- Overnight in Cairo
Day 7:
- Drive to Alexandria and visit ruins of ancient lighthouse and Catacombs
- Overnight in Alexandria
Day 8:
- Visit archeological sites and museums in Alexandria.
- Overnight flight to Luxor
Day 9:
- Visit Karnak Temple
- Evening visit to Luxor museum and Luxor Temple
- Overnight in Luxor
Day 10:
- Valley of the Kings & West Bank
- Visit royal and officials tombs on the west bank of Luxor
- Overnight in Luxor
Day 11:
- Road trip north of Luxor to visit ancient sites of Abydos and Deandara
- Return to Luxor and stay there for the night
Day 12:
Day 13:
- Visit the West Bank Temples - Deir-el Bahari, Medinet Habu and Ramesseum
- Overnight in Luxor
Day 14:
- Visit sites of Mo'alla and El Kab
- Overnight in Luxor
Day 15:
- Drive to Aswan
- Stop at Edfu and Kom Ombo
- Overnight in Aswan
Day 16:
- Aswan archaeological sites
- Visit tombs of Qubbet el-Hawa and Elephantine Isalnd
- Evening visit to Nubian Museum
- Overnight in Aswan
Day 17:
- Visit temple of Philae and ancient stone quarries of Aswan
- Depart Aswan
- Short morning flight to Abu Simbel to visit temples of Abu Simbel
- 2 hour mid-day flight to Cairo
- Check into Airport hotel
Day 18:
- Depart Cairo in the early morning
- Arrive in Memphis, TN
Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $4,150*.The program fee includes international travel, accommodations
and some meals, inland transportation, student ID card and application fee.The program
fees do not include U of M tuition, visa fees, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable
deposit of $350 is due by March 1, 2010 to secure your place. Please submit your payment
to the Study Abroad Office located in 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student,
you can pay the deposit online here.
Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is
received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to
the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program
will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days
or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees
any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be
in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should
the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees
paid.
Additional Program Fee Policy for Non U of M or Non-Degree Seeking Applicants: Non-degree seeking students who are accepted to participate in a U of M program are
required to pay a non-refundable fee of $500. This will be applied toward the total
program fee. Full payment of your program fee is due two weeks prior to the official
program start date. No arrangement can be made for deferred payment.
Scholarships: Scholarships for University of Memphis students are available through the Study Abroad
Office, 102 Brister Hall phone: 678-4271. Applications may be obtained at that office
or accessed online here. The scholarship deadline for summer programs is March 1, 2010.
