Program Description: This program examines the institution of sport from a comparative historical perspective. Beginning with sport in modern America it then shifts to examine sport in the ancient world with a particular focus on ancient Greece. Students will study for the first two weeks and a half weeks on campus in Memphis and the spend the final two and a half weeks  in Greece. This five week course asks students to consider continuity and change in the meaning of sport in ancient and modern times, with particular focus on the relationship between sport and society, the international politics of sport, the particular role of race and gender in sport as well as comparative dimensions over time and space.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to undergraduate students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university. While this program is open to students from other institutions, students must be able to attend the first portion of the course in Memphis.

Tentative Itinerary:

Day 1:

  • Depart Memphis

Day 2: Athens

  • Arrive in Athens, Greece

  • 4 nights stay in twin hotel room with private bathrooms, including breakfast at a 3-start hotel

  • Public transportation pass for the entire stay in Athens

  • Welcome orientation at hotel

  • Walk to the Philopappos Hill and Monument in the late afternoon

  • Welcome dinner at a typical Greek restaurant

Day 3: Athens

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Guided walking tour of ancient Athens in the morning including the Acropolis and the Agora

  • Afternoon is free to explore the city on your own

Day 4: Athens

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Morning lecture

  • Afternoon visit to the National Archaeological Museum

  • Opening ceremony of the Special Olympics

Day 5: Athens

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Morning lecture

  • Afternoon visit to Cape Sounion

Day 6: Athens - Loutraki

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Morning lecture

  • Afternoon visit to ancient site of Brauron

  • Travel to Loutraki for 2 night stay in a 3-star hotel

Day 7: Loutraki - Isthmia - Nemea - Loutraki

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Morning lecture

  • Entrance to the ancient site of Isthmia including the old stadium, the Temple of Poseidon, museum, ancient site of Nemea and the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea

Day 8: Sparta - Olympia

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Entrance to the ancient site of Sparta

  • Group dinner at a restaurant in or on the way to Olympia

  • 2 night stay in a 3-star hotel in Olympia

Day 9: Olympia

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Guided tour of the ancient site of Olympia

  • Afternoon lecture

Day 10: Olympia - Delphi

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Morning lecture in Delphi

  • Afternoon free to explore Delphi on your own

  • 2 night stay in a 3-star hotel in Delphi

Day 11: Delphi

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Guided tour of Delphi in the morning

  • Afternoon visit to the Museum of Delphi

  • Evening lecture

Day 12: Piraeus - Crete

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Transfer by private bus from Delphi to the port of Piraeus

  • Ferry ride from Piraeus to Chania in the early afternoon

  • Evening lecture

  • 2 night stay in a 3-star hotel in Chania

Day 13: Crete

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Guided tour of the Palace of Knossos in the morning

  • Afternoon visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion

Day 14: Crete

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Free day

Day 15: Crete - Athens

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Free day to study in Crete

  • Farewell dinner at a restaurant in Crete

  • Overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus

Day 16: Athens

  • Early morning arrival at the port of Piraeus

  • Transfer by bus from Piraeus to Athens airport

  • Departure from Athens Airport to Memphis, TN

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $3,250*. The program fee includes accommodations and breakfast, inland transportation, student ID card and application fee.The program fees do not include international travel, tuition, visa fees, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by March 1, 2011 to secure your place. Please submit you payment to the Study Abroad Office located at 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student, you can pay the deposit online here.

Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.

Additional Program Fee Policy for Non U of M or Non-Degree Seeking Applicants: Non-degree seeking students who are accepted to participate in a U of M program are required to pay a non-refundable fee of $500. This will be applied toward the total program fee. Full payment of your program fee is due two weeks prior to the official program start date. No arrangement can be made for deferred payment.
