Japanese Culture & Society

Program Cost: $3,500
Registration Deadline: March 15, 2009 (Applications will be accepted after the deadline if there are available spots).
Faculty Program Director: Professor Junko Tokuda, Instructor, Department of Foreign Languages will lead the program to Japan.
Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university. There are no prerequisites for this course.
Credit: Participants will enroll in 3 credit hours of JAPN 3900, Japanese Culture and Society. An additional 3 credits in Japanese language at the 1010 or 1020 level may be offered based on student requests for additional credit. Fees for the additional credits is not included in the program fee.
Housing and Board: Program participants will stay in a youth hostel. Rooms will be occupied by 3-6 persons.
Travel Arrangements: The Study Abroad Office will assist in making all travel arrangements for the group to Japan. Students will need a valid U.S. passport. If you do not have a passport, apply as soon as possible. Issuance requires between four and six weeks. You may also pay an additional fee to get your passport issued within two weeks. the passport application can be downloaded at http://travel.state.gov
Important: Medical conditions which require special medical care should be disclosed. Participants should be in good medical condition and be able to cope with long walks.
Program Description: The purpose of the Japan Summer program is to provide participants with an overall understanding of Japanese culture and society through offered courses and activities. Japan is a unique country as it maintains a lot of its old traditions and at the same time is a global leader in modern technology.
Participants will gain first hand experience in traditional culture such as Japanese tea ceremony, martial arts, performing arts, craftsmanship and popular culture. Through cultural exchanges with students, faculty and staff at Osaka University of Economics, participants will also have the opportunity to observe the Japanese system and the structure of Japanese society.

Program fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $3,500 and includes 3 credit hours of tuition, in-country travel, double occupancy accommodations, international student ID card and meals. The program fee does not include airfare, personal expenses and medical insurance. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by march 15, 2009 to secure your place. Payment should be made at the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall.
Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 30 days before the program start date. in addition any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.
Scholarships: Scholarships are available for University of Memphis students through the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall. Applications may be obtained at that office or downloaded at http://www.memphis.edu/abroad/scholarships.php
