Osaka, Japan - May 9 - June 1, 2011

3 credits available in Japanese Culture and Society. Students should enroll in JAPAN 3900.

Program Cost: $2,470*

Faculty Program Leader: Junko Tokuda, Instructor in Japanese, will lead the students to Osaka.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to undergraduate students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university.

Program Description: The goal of this course is to provide participants with an intensive and comprehensive cultural experience of Japan through lectures and activities. Participants will be hosted by Osaka University of Economics and will visit cultural and historical sites in Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji, Hiroshima and Tokyo.

  • Depart from U.S.

  • Arrive in Osaka, Japan

  • Check-in at Youth Hostel Shin-Osaka

May 11: Osaka

  • Orientation in Japan

May 12: Osaka

  • Osaka Museum of History

  • Historical site visit of the Osaka Castle

May 13: Osaka

  • Hands on activity at the Raamen Museum

May 14: Osaka

  • Rokko Mountain

May 15: Osaka

  • Hands on activity with Kimonos

  • Historical site visit in Kyoto - Nijo-jo Castle and Manga Museum

May 16-20: Osaka

  • Lecture at Osaka University of Economics

  • Japanese tea ceremony

  • Japanese flower arrangement

May 21: Kyoto

  • Visit to Kyomizudera Temple/Gion Corner

May 22:

  • Free day

May 23:

  • Historical site visit in Nara to Todaiji

May 24:

  • Historical site visit in Kyoto - Kinkakuji Temple and Ryoanji Temple

May 25:

  • Historical site visit to Himeji Castle

May 26:

  • Check out from Shin-Osaka Youth Hostel

  • Visit Miyajima

  • Overnight stay in Japanese style inn in Miyajima

May 27:

  • Visit Iwakuni

  • Overnight travel to Tokyo

  • Fly back to the U.S.

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $2,470*. The program fee includes accommodations in double-occupancy rooms, inland transportation, field trips, student ID card and application fee.The program fees do not include international travel, tuition, visa fees, meals, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by March 1, 2011 to secure your place. Please submit you payment to the Study Abroad Office located at 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student, you can pay the deposit online here.

Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.

Additional Program Fee Policy for Non U of M or Non-Degree Seeking Applicants: Non-degree seeking students who are accepted to participate in a U of M program are required to pay a non-refundable fee of $500. This will be applied toward the total program fee. Full payment of your program fee is due two weeks prior to the official program start date. No arrangement can be made for deferred payment.
