Application Process: In addition to the University of Memphis application, students should also complete
the MLSA Application and submit 8 passport-sized photos with their application.
Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to undergraduate students from the University of Memphis and
any accredited public or private university.
Program Description: This is the 65th year that the Universidad Complutense de Madrid will conduct a graduate
and undergraduate program for students and high school teachers interested in studying
the language, literature, culture, and civilization of Spain. The Universidad Complutense
de Madrid, with over 200,000 students, is a cultural center which offers the American
student excellent educational opportunity for intellectual and artistic development.
It combines a unique academic experience with an unusual community of students and
teachers from all over the world.
Course Description: All courses will be conducted in the morning for 4-5 hours/day Monday - Friday. Classes
will accommodate students at almost any level: beginner, intermediate, advanced, graduate
and undergraduate. A list of courses can be found on the MLSA website.
Textbooks: Students will purchase all the textbooks the first day of class in the University.
You should plan to spend approximately $25-$30.
Housing and Meals: Students will be housed in the residences of the university; home stay will be available
only on request and on a limited basis. Students are expected to be at the residences
the day before classes start and depart by noon the day after the classes are over.
Don't make plans to arrive before or stay longer because you will not be able to stay. All students will be placed in private rooms with internet access.
Three meals a day are included in SEPI residence and in the Santa Monica residence,
three meals a day are provided except dinner on Sundays and holidays. Breakfast is Continental, not American.
Activities: In the afternoon and weekends, a number of free cultural activities will take place.
On Tuesdays, movies; on Wednesdays and Fridays, videos. To get to the museums, students
need the student ID from UCM and in some instances, pay a minimum entrance fee.
Cultural Excursions: While the program is in session, the university will organize optional trips to Toledo,
Segovia, El Escorial, Ruta Del Quijote (around 30 Euros each) and, if students are
interested, to Pamplona, the beach in Biarritz, France, Barcelona, and a 3-day tour
to Cordoba, Sevilla, and Granada (price TBA). All excursions are extra and not included in the price.
Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $3,845* for undergraduates or $4,325* for graduates. The program
fee includes tuition, accommodations and most meals, airport pick-up for students
who arrive at the designated time on arrival date, student ID card and application
fee.The program fees do not include international travel, optional excursions, books,
visa fees, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350
is due by March 1, 2010 to secure your place. Please submit you payment to the Study
Abroad Office located at 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student, you can pay
the deposit online here.
Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is
received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to
the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program
will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days
or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees
any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be
in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should
the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees
paid.
