Faculty Program Directors:
Dr. Bela Bollobas, Professor and Chair of Excellence, Department of Mathematical Sciences; Dr. James Campbell, Associate Professor and Dr. Paul Balister, Professor of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Memphis will lead the program to Budapest.

Program Description: Hungary has a long tradition of excellence in mathematics research and education. Through this program students will have the opportunity to spend three weeks studying at Eotvos University in Budapest, the city national Geographic calls "Little Paris on the Danube." Eotvos University and the close-by Mathematical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences are the two institutions known for having educated more than half of Hungary's highly acclaimed mathematicians. Students may choose from three courses being offered in increasing level of maturity: Chaos and Dynamical Systems, Analytic Number Theory, and Branching Processes.
The course will meet two hours per day for three weeks, with additional supervised research, workshops and seminars on some afternoons.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university.

Credit: Participants can enroll in up to  two courses.  Transferable course credit is offered for the following courses at 3.0 credits per course: Math 4012/6012 (Analytic Number Theory),  4013/6013 (Chaos and Dynamical Systems) and  7020/8020 (Branching Processes).

Deadline: March 15, 2009 (Applications will be accepted after March 15th if there are spots available).

Housing and Board:
Participants will stay in a double or triple occupancy rental apartments. All homes will be within easy reach of the university and students will have access to public transportation.

Travel Arrangements: Airfare is not included in the program fees. The Study abroad office will assist in making all travel arrangements for the group to Budapest. Students will need a valid U.S. passport. If you do not have a passport, apply as soon as possible. Issuance requires between four and six weeks. You may also pay an additional fee to get your passport issued within two weeks. The passport application can be downloaded at http://travel.state.gov

Important: Medical conditions which require special medical care must be disclosed. Participants should be in good medical condition and be able to cope with long walks.

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee includes 3 or 6 credit hours of tuition, in-country travel, double occupancy accommodations and an international student ID card. The program fee does not include airfare, meals, personal expenses and medical insurance. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by March 15, 2009 to secure your place. Payment should be made at the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall.

Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 30 days before the program start date. In addition, any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid. Program fees are subject to changes should the estimated summer tuition be increased.

Scholarships: Scholarships are available for University of Memphis students through the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall. Applications may be obtained at that office or downloaded at http://www.memphis.edu/abroad/scholarships.php
