Spring Break in Nicaragua

Program Costs: $1,980*

Faculty Program Leader: Dr. Wayne Pitts, Assistant Professor in the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program will lead the program to Nicaragua.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to upper division undergraduate and graduate level Criminology and Criminal Justice students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university.

Program Description: This opportunity is designed to provide criminology and criminal justice students with the opportunity to observe and experience the criminal justice system in Nicaragua. Students will have the opportunity to participate in police practices and patrol, observe court processes, and visit a Nicaraguan prison. With an emphasis on cultural exposure, students will also tour a variety of sites of interests. There will also be a one-day humanitarian aid component built into the week-long excursion. Students should return to the U.S. with a broader perspective of civil law, Latin American and U.S. culture, and an appreciation for their own quality of life.

Tentative Itinerary:

Day 1:
  • Depart by Air from Memphis, arrive in Managua, Nicaragua
  • Depart by Bus from Managua to León, arrive in León
  • Stay the night at El Ayudante/board included
Day 2:
  • Tour León
  • Purchase care packages in the AM
  • Patrol with Nicaraguan National Police
  • Deliver care packages in homes around landfill in the PM (Barrio Walter Ferretti)
  • Stay the night at El Ayudante/board included
Day 3:
  • Church mass at Cathedral of León
  • Spend time with orphaned children at a child protection center
  • Stay the night at El Ayudante/board included
  • Observe court/conduct police training/do field research
  • Patrol with Nicaraguan National Police
  • Stay the night at El Ayudante/board included
Day 4:
  • Observe court/conduct police training/do field research
  • Patrol with Nicaraguan National Police
  • Stay the night at El Ayudante/board included
Day 5:
  • Free day/ market/beach/culture quest
  • Travel to Corinto and El Espigon Oceanside Café for lunch and a swim (lunch cost not included)
  • Travel to Telica to meet Puentes de Esperanza bus/Say goodbye to El Ayudante
  • Travel to Matagalpa
  • Stay the night at Puentes de Esperanza/board included
Day 6:
  • Tour Matagalpa, visit market, coffee museum
  • Observe court/conduct police training/do field research
  • Patrol with Nicaraguan National Police
  • Stay the night at Puentes de Esperanza/board included
Day 7:
  • Travel by bus to drug treatment center
  • Visit coffee plantation/eco tour
  • Stay the night at Puentes de Esperanzal/board included
Day 8:
  • See Masaya
  • Tour Managua/Visit National Police HQ
  • Stay at Hotel Reál/board NOT included
  • Transport provided by Puentes de Esperanza this day
Day 9:
  • Depart Managua by air, arrive in Memphis, TN

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $1,980*. This fee does not include tuition for 3 credit hours which is estimated at $900 for undergraduates and $1,300 for graduate students. The program fee includes international travel, accommodations, student ID card and application fee.The program fees do not include visa fees, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by January 15, 2010 to secure your place. Please submit you payment to the Study Abroad Office located at 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student, you can pay the deposit online here.


Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.
