Global Perspectives in Nursing

Faculty Program Director: Dr. Carolyn Speros, Assistant Professor in the Loewenberg School of Nursing at the University of Memphis will lead the program to Europe.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to upper division undergraduate and graduate level nursing students from the University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university.

Credit: Participants may opt to enroll in 3 credit hours of NURS 4309 (Undergraduate level) or NURS 7811 (Graduate level).

Deadline: February 15, 2010 (Applications will be accepted after February 15th if there are spots available).

Housing and Board: Participants will stay in double occupancy rooms in 2-3 star hotels in Switzerland, France, and Germany. Breakfast each day and some meals are included in the program fees. All sightseeing fees, entrance fees to tour sites, and transportation fees during the tour are also included.

Travel Arrangements: The Study abroad office will assist participants in making all travel arrangements to Europe. Students will need a valid U.S. passport. If you do not have a passport, apply as soon as possible. Issuance requires between four and six weeks. You may also pay an additional fee to get your passport issued within two weeks. The passport application can be downloaded at http://travel.state.gov

Important: Medical conditions which require special medical care must be disclosed. Participants should be in good medical condition and be able to cope with long walks and high altitudes.

Program Description: This study abroad program is designed for nursing students interested in increasing their understanding of international health care issues as they relate to nursing. The intent of the course is to broaden the student’s world view and global perspective of nursing and healthcare systems.

Tentative Program Schedule

Day 1: Depart Memphis to Geneva, Switzerland

Day 2: Geneva

Arrival at Geneva Airport

Transfer by private bus from the airport to your hotel in Geneva

2 nights in twin bedded rooms with private bathrooms including breakfast at a 2-star hotel in Geneva

Guided Walking Tour of Geneva in the afternoon

Afterwards, free time to explore Geneva

Welcome dinner at a restaurant in Geneva

Day 3: Geneva

Breakfast at the hotel

Transfer by private bus during the day

Visit to UNAIDS or the WHO (to be confirmed)

Visit to International Council of Nurses in the afternoon

Guided tour of the Red Crescent Museum in the late afternoon


Day 4: Geneva - Freiburg - Strasbourg

Breakfast at the hotel

Transfer by private bus during the day

Visit to the University Hospital of Freiburg Center of Nursing Education and the University Hospital of Freiburg

6 nights in twin bedded rooms with private bathrooms including breakfast at the Chateau Pourtales or at a hotel in Strasbourg

BBQ dinner at the Chateau de Pourtales

Day 5: Strasbourg

Breakfast at the hotel/ Chateau

Transfer by public transportation during the day

Visit to a hospital in Strasbourg (to be confirmed)

Free afternoon in Strasbourg to spend at own leisure


Day 6: Baden-Baden

Breakfast at the hotel / Chateau

Guided tour of the Caracalla Spa in the spa town of Baden-Baden to learn more about their operations in the German health care sector.

Afterwards, free time to spend some relaxing hours in the spa or to go shopping in the city center


Day 7: Route du Vin

Breakfast at the hotel / Chateau

Transfer by private bus

Guided tour along the famous Route du Vin, including a visit to the Castle Haut Koenigsbourg.

Entrance to Albert Schweitzer Museum in his house in Gunsbach

Alsatian Tarte Flambee Dinner at a Restaurant on the Route du Vin


Day 8: (Strasbourg) National Holiday in France/ Germany

Breakfast at the hotel / Chateau

Cycling tour through the Parc de Pourtales in the morning followed by a picnic

Transfer by public transportation during the afternoon

Guided city tour of Strasbourg by boat and afterwards a short walking tour through the city of Strasbourg



Day 9: Heidelberg

Breakfast at the hotel / Chateau

Visit  Heidelberg Castle in the morning and guided tour of the German Pharmacy Museum which is located in the castle

Lunch at the residential home of St. Thomas e. V.

Visit a mental health facility in Germany

Day 10: Strasbourg - Paris

Breakfast at the hotel / Chateau

Transfer by Private bus to the train station in Strasbourg

TGV train ticket to Paris

Transfer by private bus to the hotel in Paris

2 nights in twin bedded rooms with private bathrooms Including breakfast

Public transportation pass for the entire stay in Paris

Visit to a Paris Hospital with a tour of their emergency room, patients unit and trauma center (to be confirmed)


Day 11: Paris

Breakfast at the hotel

Guided tour of the Hospital Museum "Musee de l'Assistance Public Hopitaux de Paris"

Free afternoon to explore Paris at own leisure

Farewell Dinner at a restaurant in Paris


Day 12: Paris

Breakfast at the hotel

Transfer by private bus to the airport in Paris

Departure from Paris Airport to the USA

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $2,850. This fee does not include tuition for 3 credit hours which is estimated at $900 for undergraduates and $1,300 for graduate students. The program fee includes in-country travel, double room hotel accommodations, student ID card, application fee, breakfast, and some meals. The program fees do not include round trip travel to Europe, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by February 1, 2010 to secure your place. Payment should be made at the Study Abroad Office, 102 Brister Hall.


Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.
