Faculty Program Leader: Dr. Yuhua Li, Associate Professor of the Department of Health and Sport Sciences will lead the group to Shanghai.

Eligibility and Space Available: The program is open to Juniors, Seniors and Graduate students from the University of Memphis or any accredited public or private university.

Program Description: Students will travel to Shanghai, China and encounter authentic Chinese culture and customs for healthy living. Students will experience the balanced life energy according to traditional Chinese medicine as they engage in exercise for health promotion, learn about the healing properties of food and visit tranquil gardens and teahouses. Students will come into contact with the 3,000 year old Chinese healing arts that focus on achieving harmony through movement, diet and mediation.

Tentative Itinerary:

Day 1:

• Depart for Shanghai, China

Day 2:

• Arrive in Pudong Airport

• Lodging at Shanghai Normal University (SNU)

Day 3:

• Morning Exercise at Shanghai Normal University

• Lecture "Chinese History and Culture: Impact on Health Practices"

• Visit Jade Buddha Temple (Yufo-Si)

Day 4:

• Visit Zhou Zhuang Water Village

Day 5:

• Morning exercises
• Visit Shanghai Chinese Medical College - school and hospital
• Attend Chinese acrobat performance

Day 6:

• Morning exercise

• Visit the local markets of Cheng-huang-miao

Day 7:

• Morning exercise

• Hangzhou Gardens, teahouse, walking trails and canoeing

Day 8:

• Morning exercise

• Shanghai Museum

• Shanghai Institute of Sport

Day 9:

• Morning exercise

• Wai Tain, Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and Nan-jing Road (shopping mall and stores)

• Touring the Huang-Pu River

Day 10:

• Visit Suzhou Gardens and tea houses

Day 11:

• Morning exercise

• Shanghai World Expo

Day 12:

• Depart Pudong Airport

• Arrive in Memphis, TN

Program Fees and Refund Policy: The program fee is $1,200. The program fee includes accommodations, inland transportation, student ID card and application fee.The program fees do not include international travel, tuition, visa fees, medical insurance or personal expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due by March 1, 2010 to secure your place. Please submit you payment to the Study Abroad Office located at 102 Brister Hall. If you are a U of M student, you can pay the deposit online here.

Fees with the exception of the deposit will be refunded in full if notification is received 90 days before the program start date. Withdrawals up to 45 days prior to the program will incur a charge of $500. Withdrawals up to 20 days before the program will incur a charge of 50% of the program fees. All other withdrawals within 20 days or less will incur a charge of 75% of the program fees. In addition to these fees any unrecoverable expenses will be billed to the student. Cancellations should be in writing and are only effective upon date of receipt of written notification. Should the University decide to cancel the program, there will be a full refund of all fees paid.
