1. Competence in a common core of material in the major area of specialization. Diagnostic examinations for entering students, Coursework in major area, Cumulative Written Exams, Prospectus (Oral/Written), Thesis/Thesis Defense, Research Presentation. Diagnostic Exams (1st week), Coursework (1-2 years), Cumulative Exams (2nd year), Prospectus (2nd year), Thesis/Thesis defense (upon completion of requirements)
2. Experience in experimental design, data analysis, and oral and written presentation of research results. Research Prospectus, Thesis/Thesis Defense, Presentation at Department and Professional Meetings, Preparation of written manuscript for submission to peer-reviewed publications. Prospectus (2nd year), Thesis/Thesis defense (upon completion of requirements), Publications/Presentations (during and following the time in the program).
3. Competitive for professional positions in the chemical sciences. Survey of post-graduation employment in the chemical field (Such as pursuit doctoral degree, employment in industry or academia), # of publications/presentations/awards received by the student. Survey of employment status at graduation, and at 1 year, 3 year and 5 years post graduation, Publications/Presentations (during and following the time in the program).
4. Proficiency in a minor area of specialization outside of the major. Diagnostic examinations for entering students, Coursework in major area, Cumulative Written Exams, Prospectus (Oral/Written), Thesis/Thesis Defense, Research Presentation.
