Dr. Melvin Beck joined the faculty of then Memphis State University in 1974 after receiving his Ph.D.
from the University of Arkansas. He has served as Coordinator of Graduate Studies
and Chair of the Department of Biology.
Mel has taught general biology, genetics, human genetics, and cytogenetics to undergraduate
and graduate students.
He has been the recipient of the University Distinguished Teaching Award, Thomas Briggs
Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award, and W. Russell Smith Excellence in Teaching
Award. Mel recently received the University Distinguished Advising Award, which recognizes
excellence in undergraduate advising.
