The University of Memphis Adult Scholarship
Adult students often go through varying degrees of hardship when beginning or returning to complete their education. The Adult Scholarship Program is designed to help adult students reach their educational goals. This highly competitive, renewable scholarship is $5,500 per year for full-time students; $3,000 per year for part-time students and is awarded annually to a limited number of students.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- In-state and out-of-state undergraduate students are eligible.
- Must be pursuing first undergraduate degree to be eligible.
- Students must reach their 25th birthday by August 1st of application year.
- Current students must have a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. and new students must meet Adult Admission requirements to be considered for selection.
- Part-time students must complete a minimum of 6 hours and full-time students must complete a minimum of 12 hours per semester.
- Preference given to students who do not already have a scholarship.
In addition to the above requirements, applicants must also submit a typed essay (500 words or less) detailing "Why I need or deserve an adult scholarship."
RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS (If you are awarded the Adult Scholarship)
- Renewable for up to (dependent upon class level at the time the scholarship is awarded) eight (8) full time or equivalent part-time semesters.
- Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
- Completion of Service hours: 150 hours per academic year for full-time students and 75 hours per academic year for part-time students. All service hours must be approved through the Adult and Commuter Student Services Office.
- Become an active member of the Adult Student Association (ASA) upon acceptance of the scholarship.
- Actively participate in the Adult Scholarship Mentoring Program during your first year on the scholarship.
The Tennessee Hope Lottery Scholarship - Nontraditional Student Component
The non-traditional student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be an entering freshman at the minimum age of 25 years as of the date of enrollment. An �entering freshman� is defined as a student who is for the first time attempting any semester hours at any post-secondary school after graduating from high school, home school or obtaining a GED. The adjusted gross income attributable to the student must be no more than $36,000 per year.
Additionally, these students must work their way into the HOPE Scholarship program by attempting the first 24 semester hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.75. Students are eligible to receive the HOPE Scholarship in the semester following the one in which this academic requirement is met.
To continue receiving the HOPE Scholarship, the adult learner must maintain satisfactory academic progress, maintain the adjusted gross income requirement, and be continuously enrolled with a minimum of 6 semester hours each semester.
