Faculty and Staff Giving Program FAQ

Why should I support the University of Memphis my making a gift through the Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign?

Giving is a personal decision and each person who gives through the Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign has their own answer to that question. Given the unique nature of our job, we have the privilege of working with students on a daily basis and doing something extra for them to really show them that we support their efforts as students. Tuition and state funding do not cover the entire cost to educate a student. Without the support of faculty and staff members, students would not have great things like updated technology or resources. It's also a way for us to give back to the students, because when you think about it without them none of us would be here.

In addition to your daily contributions of energy and effort, a financial contribution is a different and important way to demonstrate your investment in the University of Memphis and its students. There are an endless number of reasons to make a gift but all reflect a sincere belief in the work being done here at the University and a belief in every student's pursuit to fulfill their dreams. Ultimately, your participation in the annual fund is a vote of confidence in the University and its future. Any gift you make will contribute to a sense of partnership across campus and pride beyond campus.

How much should I give?

While our goal is to raise $150,000 for the University of Memphis, participation is truly our number one goal this year. You determine the size and designation of your gift according to your wishes, your personal willingness to give, and your financial capacity. Regardless of the amount, every gift truly makes a difference. The President's Society is established to recognize donors who exhibit leadership through their gifts to the University of Memphis.

May I designate my gift to any area of campus?

Absolutely! You can designate your gift to any school, college, department, or academic program on campus that you personally value. Many donors choose to designate their gift to the Academic Fund, the University's unrestricted fund. The Academic Fund allows the University to designate gifts to an area(s) with the greatest need and take advantage of unexpected opportunities that benefit the University of Memphis. Others choose to designate their gift to the University Library because it's one area of campus everyone benefits from and they wish to support important library acquisitions to make the University stronger.

How does payroll deduction work?

Who will know about my gift?

Participation in the campaign is your choice. You will receive a receipt but the amount of your gift will remain confidential to others. If you wish to keep your gift entirely anonymous, you can indicate so on the Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign gift form. Unless otherwise noted, all donors through the Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign will be listed on the donor honor roll and receive special recognition throughout the year.

Can I make a gift jointly with my spouse?

Certainly! You can make a joint gift if your spouse is an employee, an alumnus, or simply wants to be included in your generosity to the University of Memphis. Simply complete the spouse information section of the Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign gift form when making your gift.

When the University of Memphis approaches corporations and foundation to ask them to consider endowing a scholarship, professorship or major university building, one of the questions often asked is, "What percentage of your faculty and staff contribute to the University?" A high faculty/staff giving percentage is an endorsement by employees that the University is a worthy place to work and worthy of their investment as major donors. Faculty and staff participation also plays a major role in academic rankings and the University's reputation overall.
