| How
to Set Up a Scholarship
Approximately 25 percent of students at The University
of Memphis benefit each year from scholarships set up by individuals,
corporations, and organizations. Scholarships may be named in memory
of, in honor of, or in recognition of individuals or organizations.
There are two types of scholarships: Endowed and
Annual
Endowed Scholarships
A named endowed scholarship fund requires a minimum
$30,000 contribution, which may be paid over a period of five years.
Contributions are invested and a portion of the investment income
is used each year to award a scholarship. Any remaining income is
reinvested to continue building the account to ensure that the fund
remains viable in the event of tuition increases.
Typically, no funds are awarded until the scholarship
is fully endowed. The first scholarship is usually awarded one year
from the date the fund is fully endowed.
Annual Scholarships
Annual scholarships are generally funded at a
minimum of $1,000 for an undergraduate student or $2,500 for a graduate
student. These scholarships also may be named according to the wishes
of the donor.
An account is established for each annually funded
scholarship to be awarded on a yearly basis. The full amount of
the annual award must be paid on June 30 of each year in order to
be budgeted for the following year.
