New Leadership

The College of Education Alumni Chapter is proud to announce that Angela Macklin (MS ’09) has been selected as its 2009-2010 chapter president. Angela hopes to guide the chapter this year as it strives to gain new members and re-establish itself as a strong and active Alumni Chapter.

Educator of the Year Award

The College of Education Alumni Chapter is proud to announce that Gail Smithers (BS ’70) is this year’s Outstanding Educator of the Year Award Recipient. Gail received her award at an on field award ceremony at the Memphis vs ECU football game in late October.

Gail was selected as the Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of Tennessee in 2002. She is a winner of the Tennessee Lottery Teacher of the Week and she has served as a supervising teacher for student teachers from the University of Memphis while serving as a mentor for many young teachers in the MCS system. She currently serves on the Leadership Council for Downtown Elementary School and was instrumental in putting together the Nelson Mandela Project, a 5th grade curriculum published for Memphis City Schools.

Debra Robb (BS ’76, MS ‘81), retired Memphis City Schools teacher, was honored as an 2008 Outstanding Education Alumna. 

Educator's Day

The College of Education Alumni Chapter will host an Educator’s Day at the October 27 football game as the Tigers take on ECU. The Educator of the Year will be honored with an on-field award presentation and anyone who shows their school credentials, proving that they are a local area educator (i.e. Memphis City Schools ID badge, Shelby County Schools ID badge, etc), may enjoy pre-paid reduced admission of $5 per ticket.
