Herff College of Engineering Outstanding Alumni Awards Tuesday, April 16, 6:30 pm - Reception, 7:00 pm - Dinner Holiday Inn - University of Memphis Arif Shakeel (BSME '77), director of Western Digital Corporation, will receive the Outstanding
Alumnus Award. Also being recognized for service to the College and to the field of
engineering are Tommy Carls, Medtronic's senior vice president for Research and Development; E. Hunter Harrison, CEO of Canadian Pacific Railroad; John Ray, Jr., CareFusion's vice president for Global Research and development; and International Paper.
Tickets are $35 for Alumni Association members or $40 for not-yet members. You can
sponsor a student for $25. The Alumni Chapter will present its annual Silent Auction
to raise funds for its Book Scholarships. RSVP by April 10 at 901/678-4306.
Book Scholarship
All current Herff College juniors and seniors are invited to apply for the Alumni
Chapter's Book Scholarship. Up to 2 scholarships can be awarded in the amount of $500

Recent Events
Professional Development Luncheon Engineering professionals and students attended a Professional Development Seminar
in February featuring LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED accredited professionals, Daniel McKee, David Bradford, Eric Sheffer, Tony Pellicciotti (BSET
'93) and Krissy Buck, provided an overview of LEED, a leading edge system for certifying
the greenest performing buildings in the world. The panel discussion covered sustainability
in design, construction, and building operations including best practices and current
technologies. Attendees received a certificate for one professional development hour
(PDH).
Engineering Outstanding Alumni Awards In early April, the Engineering Alumni Chapter presented its Outstanding Alumni Awards
at the Herff College of Engineering's annual awards banquet. The 2012 recipients were
Jim Dean (BSET '80), president of SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Adventure Island, and
Mark Askew (BSCE '76), founder and president of Askew Hargraves Harcourt & Associates.
As part of the Chapter's celebration of the University's Centennial, all previous
recipients of this award were welcomed back for special recognition during the program.
The Chapter also held a Silent Auction before the dinner to benefit its book scholarship
