4th Annual Memphis Law School for Journalists

Thank you for joining journalists and lawyers at the 4th Annual Law School for Journalists that was held in mid-September. Journalists and lawyers explored how the new technology, from websites to blogs to Twitter, is changing the way journalism is practiced and how the law and legal system are adapting.  Panels of expert media lawyers and experienced reporters and bloggers discussed how traditional access, open records, and open meetings law are adapting – or not adapting – to the new media environment.  Brooke Gladstone, the co-host of NPR’s On the Media, moderated a discussion of this year’s highly public controversy arising from The Commercial Appeal’s web publication of the public-records database of the identities of concealed-weapon carry permit holders, with Editor Chris Peck and State Senator and Majority Leader Mark Norris of Collierville.

This event was sponsored by: The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, the Journalism Department of the College of Communication and Fine Arts at the University of Memphis, The Law Alumni Chapter and the Memphis Bar Association.
