Black History Month
The University of Memphis Black Student Association kicked off Black History Month by honoring the Memphis State Eight, the first African American students to attend the U of M, with the 2009 Arthur S. Holman Lifetime Achievement Award. This year over 300 people were in attendance as Luther C. McClellan, Rose Blakney-Love, Sammie Burnett-Johnson, Eleanor Gandy, Marvis Laverne Kneeland Jones, Ralph Prater, Bertha Rogers Looney and John Simpson received their awards. Mr. Luther C. McClellan, the Alumni Chapter namesake, was the first African American to graduate from then-Memphis State University. Although these trailblazers experienced discrimination and tough times, they persevered and went on to live very successful lives. They left a strong and lasting legacy for future African American students.
