Alumni Spotlight: Janice Ballard (MPH '11)
Being someone who is driven by a strong sense of personal mission, it was imperative
that Janice’s education equip her to fulfill that duty. This is exactly what the Masters
of Public Health (MPH) program at the University of Memphis did for her. From the
first day of her first class, Foundations of Public Health, she knew she was in the
right place. "Every course thereafter, has been of significant value to the fulfillment
of my life's work," says Ballard. The training she received from the MPH program has
bolstered her competence to carry out her mission to be a catalyst for change through
consistent service to promote health and well-being in communities around the world.
The program has adequately prepared her to function as a global health consultant for Heart to Heart International. In this role, she was instrumental in developing a community health worker training program in rural Haiti, where she conducted her practicum. On the local level, she is using the skills gained in the public health program to coordinate the Healthy Shelby Initiative managed by Healthy Memphis Common Table. The MPH program equipped her to make a world of difference, both locally and globally.
