Alumni Association Spotlight: Sonja Luecke (BA '99, MA '02)
 |
Sonja Luecke (BA ’99, MA ’02) came to the University of Memphis as an exchange student
from Germany in 1994. A year abroad turned into a life in the U.S. when Luecke decided
to stay in Memphis to finish her bachelor’s degree and pursue a graduate degree in
journalism.
The program at the U of M provided her with many opportunities and outstanding mentors.
It also prepared her for a profession in which resourcefulness is essential. Signing
on as a volunteer intern for Youth Villages after graduate school, Luecke is now the
organization’s senior public relations coordinator, responsible for offices across
the country. Additionally, she works as a freelance journalist for The Commercial Appeal, where she writes Spotlight on Mom, a weekly column that features mothers from the Greater Memphis Area.
“I still try to write as many stories as I can,” Luecke says, “about the families
at Youth Villages and about the moms in Memphis. Those are amazing stories that never
fail to inspire me and I hope that by telling them they will also inspire others.”
