	Alumni Spotlight: The Hon. Robert L. "Butch" Childers Judge Childers (BBA '71, JD '74) was elected Circuit Court Judge in Tennessee in 1984, and was re-elected in 1990, 1998, and 2006. He is a past President of the Tennessee Judicial Conference and the Tennessee Trial Judges Association, and has served as a Special Judge of the Tennessee Supreme Court and the Tennessee Court of Appeals. Childers is Immediate Past Chair of the American Bar Association Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs (CoLAP) and has been a member of the Commission since 2000. He also served for 10 years on the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program Commission (TLAP). In addition to being a charter member, past President and Master of the Bench of the Leo Bearman Sr. Chapter of the American Inns of Court, he has chaired the Tennessee Judicial Conference Civil Pattern Jury Instruction Committee since 1991. He is a past Chair of the Tennessee Domestic Violence State Coordinating Council. Judge Childers is incoming President of the University of Memphis Law Alumni Chapter for 2012-2013.

The Honorable Childers has been recognized as Outstanding Judge of the Year five times since 1984 (1986, 1990, 1998, 2005 and 2006), and received the Judge Wheatcraft Award for outstanding service in combating domestic violence in 2000. In 2012 he received the Justice Frank F. Drowota, III Outstanding Judicial Service Award. Additionally, The Hazelden Legal Professionals Program awarded Judge Childers the first “Excellence in Legal Community Leadership Award” this October. He also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Memphis in 2002. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Memphis Rotary Club in 2007 and has been on the faculty of the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada Reno. Childers has been a frequent lecturer and speaker at continuing legal education seminars in Tennessee and throughout the nation.

When asked why remaining connected to the University of Memphis was so important, Childers stated that both the University and the Law School, "have given me so much. They have enabled me to do my life's work, both on a local and national level. Coming from a humble background, I wouldn't have been able to achieve the level of success that I have without the University of Memphis. I am very proud to be able to give back to the School and help insure that our students have the same resources and opportunities that I did."
