True Blue Tailgate

Pouncer's Pals
Pouncer’s Pals will kick off its first event for the 2013-2014 calendar year with the Walk Around the Field Tailgate and Football game on Saturday, September 21, during the Men’s Football game against Arkansas State. All members are invited to attend and will receive free food, football tickets for each Pouncer’s Pal and one parent/guardian, and the opportunity to walk around the field with Tom the Tiger before kickoff.   To learn more about Pouncer’s Pals contact jpsavell@memphis.edu or 901-678-3119. On Saturday, October 26, Pouncer's Pals will host the Trick or Treat and Costume Contest a the Men's Soccer Game at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Trick or treat with Pouncer and enter the costume contest to win prizes. More details to follow.

Nursing Alumni Chapter

UMAR Coffee & ConversationUMAR
Enjoy breakfast with the UMAR Book Club on Tuesday, September 24, at 11 am at The Green Grove before discussing this month's literary work, The Black Russian by Vladimir Alexandrov. On the first Tuesday of each month, the UMAR Breakfast Bunch gathers at 9 am for a casual breakfast at the Perkins Restaurant & Bakery located in the Eastgate Shopping Center, at 5112 Park Avenue. The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 1. All UMAR members and U of M retirees are welcome. The cost of breakfast is on your own.

On Thursday, October 10, UMAR will be in Cordova for its monthly Mix & Match. Jane Hooker, co-author of Arcadia’s Images of America series Cordova, will be on-hand at 10:00 am to give a tour of the Cordova Museum. Lunch will follow at 11:30 am at the acclaimed Café Fontana on your own, with a tour of the 1914 Walter Granville Home and Eckland Plantation afterwards. Student Ambassador Board
On Friday, October 4, SAB will host its annual Mudball Tournament at 1 pm on Tiger Beach at Richardson Towers. Everyone, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, are invited to form teams of 6 to play volleyball and tug-of-war in the mud. Proceeds benefit the J. Wayne Johnson Scholarship Fund. Dr. Shirley Raines will be inducted into the Tennessee Women's Hall of Fame
Six extraordinary women will be inducted this year into the Tennessee Women’s Hall of Fame, a program of the Tennessee Economic Council on Women. The induction ceremony will be held Monday, October 28, 2013 at 12 noon, at the Nashville Airport Marriott as part of the 10th Annual Economic Summit for Women. The purpose of the Tennessee Women’s Hall of Fame is to recognize and honor women who are exceptionally accomplished and have made outstanding, unique and lasting contributions to the economic, political, and cultural well-being of Tennessee.

Governor's Management Fellowship Program
Governor Bill Haslam announced the Tennessee Governor’s Management Fellowship program for exceptional applicants who wish to serve and learn under Tennessee state government’s top leaders. The nonpartisan program offers a competitive salary and is open to recent graduates demonstrating outstanding academic achievement, a passion for serving their communities and outstanding character and leadership abilities. Five fellows will be chosen by an executive committee of some of the state’s foremost leaders. Fellows will be given the opportunity to spend two years working full-time for senior and top-ranking government officials beginning August 11, 2014. After spending six months on statewide projects, fellows will be assigned to one of state government’s 22 departments. They will then serve directly under the commissioner of that department. Fellows will participate in an 18-month leadership development program, attend events with the state’s top public and private sector leaders and assume responsibility on important statewide and departmental initiatives.
 
Applicants must have graduated from an undergraduate institution or graduate program between December 2011 and August 2014. They must prove excellence in academics, exhibit leadership ability and show involvement in extracurricular, community and/or civic activities. The fellowship application can be completed through the website www.tn.gov/governor/fellowship. Applications will be open until Wednesday, October 30, 2013.

Provost Blog
Provost David Rudd has launched a blog in order to share news and ideas with the University community and to spark discussion of important topics. Recent posts include student success stories and the importance of faculty research. Future posts will discuss budget initiatives and other important issues.
