Ear Ornament (c. AD 200-800) Mesoamerican attributed, possibly Mexico White stone Gift of Burton Hunter 2003.1.164

Mesoamericans adorned their earlobes with "ear flares" in order to invite spirits of water, air and earth access to their thoughts. Both men and women wore "ear flares." The larger and more highly decorated the "ear flare" was, the higher the wearer's social status.
