Trained as an American realist painter, Davis later absorbed European Modernism. The
fractured planes of Picasso's early 20th century cubist abstractions incorporated
bits of real life in the form of newspaper ads, matchbooks or other collaged elements.
Davis' American cubism included similar references to everyday consumer culture, a
strategy later adopted by his pop art followers like Lichtenstein.
