For students wishing to study architecture, the department offers the pre-professional
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in Architecture and the Master of Architecture
degree. Together, these degrees make up the professional "4+2" curriculum.
The successful completion of the 128 credit hour undergraduate architecture curriculum
leads to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with a major in Architecture.
After earning the BFA in Architecture degree, students may pursue the professional
Master of Architecture (M.Arch) degree at the University of Memphis or at other universities.
The BFA, along with a quality portfolio, allows students to be considered for acceptance
into the professional two-year program of study.
In addition to the University of Memphis, during the past five years BFA in Architecture
graduates have been accepted into M.Arch programs at the University of Virginia, Virginia
Tech, Georgia Tech, University of Florida, Washington University, University of Tennessee,
University of Michigan, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Texas, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Yale University, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, California
College of the Arts, University of Oregon, University of Southern California, Southern
California Institute of Architecture,and others.
The successful completion of the 60 credit hour graduate architecture curriculum leads
to the Master of Architecture degree. Students already holding the BFA in Architecture
from the University of Memphis or an appropriate degree from another institution may
seek admittance into the M.Arch degree program.
The BFA in Architecture is a pre-professional degree and is not accredited by the
National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The M.Arch is not yet accredited
by the NAAB. However, the University has initiated procedures for the accreditation
