Meet the Cadre & Staff of the University of Memphis ARMY ROTC
Professor of Military Science
LTC Steve Sigloch is the Professor of Military Science and Battalion Commander. He
is a 1993 graduate of Texas A&M University and received his commission as an Engineer
Officer. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management, a Master
of Science Degree in Engineering Management from University of Missouri at Rolla,
and a Master's Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War
College. He has served in the 1st Infantry Division in Germany and the 25th Infantry
Division. He has completed two tours in Iraq as the Brigade Engineer for 3-25 IBCT
and the Executive Officer for 3 BSTB.
Executive Officer MS I Instructor
MAJ Greg Leiphart is the Executive Officer. He is a 1998 graduate of Penn State University
and received his commission as a branch detailed Infantry Officer to Adjutant General.
He served as an Infantry platoon leader with the 4th Infantry Division, FT Carson,
CO. In 2006, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Company Commander
under the 25th Infantry Division. In 2010, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring
Freedom with the ISAF Joint Command as a plans officer. Additional assignments include:
Portland, Maine MEPS Operations Officer, 2d Signal Brigade S1, 173rd ABCT Brigade
S1, and U.S. Army Europe G1 Plans Officer.
Senior Military Instructor
Master Sergeant Venson Herron is the Military Science III Instructor and Training
Noncommissioned Officer. He is a Master Sergeant with 19 years of active Army service.
He has served in every position in the infantry from Rifleman to Platoon Sergeant.
He deployed to Operation Joint Endeavor in Bosnia in 1995 as a Cable Team Chief with
Task Force-72nd Signal Battalion. In 2003, he deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom
(OIF) as a Squad Leader with Task Force 2-69 Armor and again to OIF 10-11 and Operation
New Dawn with Task Force 3-69 Armor as a Platoon Sergeant.
Military Science Instructor
Master Sergeant Jimmy E. Smith Jr. is from Tucson, Arizona. He graduated from Cholla
High School and enlisted in the Army in January of 1992. Master Sergeant Smith has
served in Headquarters and Headquarters Battery (HHB) Division Artillery and 1-7 Field
Artillery (FA) of Fort Drum, NY; Howitzer Battery (HWB) 3/3 Armored Cavalry Regiment
(ACR) of Fort Bliss, TX; HWB 2/3 ACR of Fort Carson, CO; 2-17th FA of Fort Carson,
CO; Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), Fort Polk, LA; B Battery (1SG) 4-27 FA,
Fort Bliss, TX; and in HHB (1SG) at Fort Bliss, TX. He has been a Fire Direction Specialist,
Senior Fire Direction Specialist, Fire Direction Computer, Chief Fire Direction, Fire
Support NCO (FSNCO), Platoon Sergeant and 1SG. Master Sergeant Smith has also served
as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Sill, OK. His deployments include: Somolia and Bosnia
with the 10th Mountain Division and Iraq with 2nd Infantry Division.
MS II Instructor

Mr. Huey is a Military Science Instructor. He is a graduate of Christian Brothers’
University. He transferred here from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and
Alabama A&M. He was commissioned in 1991 as a Field Artillery Officer. He has served
as a Forward Observer, Platoon Leader, Fire Direction Officer, Executive Officer,
Battery Commander, Assistant Operations Officer, Personnel Officer, Logistics Officer,
Liaison Officer, Training Officer and a Training Adviser. He is currently an Operations Officer for a Liaison Unit in the Tennessee National Guard. He has been
deployed in both the Global War on Terrorism and in support of Humanitarian Missions.
Recruiting and Retention Officer
MAJ Brian Hagood is the Scholarship and Enrollment Officer. He received his commission
as a Signal Officer in 1997 upon completion of ROTC at the University of North Alabama.
He deployed in 1999 in support of Task Force Hawk in Albania as a Platoon Leader.
In 2003, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation
Iraqi Freedom (OIF) as a Joint Operations Center Battle Captain for CJTF-4 and as
a Signal Officer for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. In 2004, he deployed
support of OIF II and again in 2005 in support of OIF 05-07 as a Company Commander.
In 2011, he deployed in support of OEF as a Brigade Signal Officer.
History Instructor
Erich C. Miller graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA and
received his commission as an armor officer in the United States Army in May 2001.
His first duty assignment was with the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division in
Vilseck Germany from 2001-2005. He deployed twice with 3rd Brigade serving tours in Kosovo and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He mobilized in 2009
and deployed to OIF in 2010 with the 278ACR. His other duty assignments include Troop
Commander and Assistant S3 with 5/15 Cavalry from 2005-2008. In 2008, he transferred
to the 278ACR in the Tennessee National Guard.
Supply Technician
Mr. Cassius Davis is the Tiger Battalion's Supply Technician. He retired as a Sergeant
First Class, with a total of 20 years of active military service. His last assignment
before retiring was as the S4 for the Army Reserve Officer Training Program in the
northeastern part of the United States. Mr. Davis has been with The University of
Memphis Army ROTC since August 2005.
Human Resources Technician
Mr. Noah Lowe is the Tiger Battalion's Human Resources Technician. He retired as a
Sergeant First Class, with a total of 24 years of active military service and an additional
6 years in the National Guard and the Army Reserve. His military duties include Infantry,
Supply and Human Resources. He has been with The University of Memphis Army ROTC since
August 2007.
Secretary
Ms. Donna Haskins, a native of Memphis, joins the Tiger Battalion from the biology
department where she served as secretary. She is no stranger to the battalion as she
has previously been assigned to Army ROTC and is excited to be back.
