Elyan studies the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying seasonal rhythms of physiology and behavior in Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus). Her research is focused on the roles of melatonin and its central target tissues in mediating seasonal changes in immune function, stress responsiveness, and the gut microbiome. She also studies the relationship between the brain, immunity, stress, and the gut, how these elements influence each other, and how they affect behavior.
