During your time here in the BME Department at the UofM you can take advantage of
Honors Program offering high achieving students a chance to develop advanced skills and undergo
more extensive professional development during the BS degree. There is a minimum GPA
requirement to enter and remain in the program. At completion, the Honor’s designation
appears on the student’s diploma and academic transcript. Please contact our Academic
Coordinators (Dr. Curry or Dr. Bumgardner) if you would like to know more about this excellent opportunity.
Accelerated BS/MS Program allows those students who are interested in advanced degrees to get started during
their Junior year. The program allows students to complete the BS and MS degrees in
5 years. Accelerated students begin to work in a laboratory environment during their
Junior year and most students obtain a Graduate Assistantship for their efforts. Please
contact our department for more information.
“The 3-2 program has equipped me with a better understanding of orthopedics within
the field of biomedical engineering. The journey has not only been challenging but
also has enabled me to gain hands on experience in several fields of research.” Hummad
Tasneem (Class of 2013)
The Cooperative (Co-op) Education Program offers students a real-world engineering experience with a one-year internship during
their undergraduate education. Many of the biomedical companies in the Memphis area
(Medtronic, Smith & Nephew, Wright Medical Technology) allow our students abundant
internship opportunities. Please contact Ms. Sheila Moses (678-4933; email@example.com) to learn more about this program.
International/Study Abroad Programs. Engineering is a global industry and profession in which engineers, scientists, and
managers from diverse backgrounds and cultures must function in a dynamic international
environment. Engineers are often called upon daily to deal with foreign suppliers
and customers. Opportunities for students to experience work and education in different
countries and experience different cultures allows them to be more competitive and
successful in the international markets and in the ever changing global environment.
Please contact The University of Memphis Study Abroad Office to find out about different
study abroad programs, requirements, and scholarships.
More importantly a diverse environment with active student oriented professional societies
such as Biomedical Engineering Society and Society for Women Engineers and instructors
with broad research and teaching interests.
