Welcome to Camp CHEF

Cultivating Healthy Eaters for the Future

In June 2017, the School of Health Studies (SHS) hosted a fun and healthy weeklong camp for twenty incoming 3rd through 5th graders.  Each day started with the campers exploring the TIGUrS Garden and learning how fresh produce cultivates and the steps needed to maintain healthy plants. Campers then prepared nutritious snacks and lunchtime meals to acquire many different culinary skills, such as chopping, measuring, sautéing, and baking. Lunchtime was followed by a nutrition lesson focusing on “Eating the Rainbow.” They learned about different nutrients in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet foods and how to prepare them. The days ended with a physical activity event to emphasize the importance of exercise and that movement can be fun! We hope that each camper learned lifelong skills that they can blend into their lives to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

We plan to host three separate 1-week sessions in the summer of 2018, so stay tuned for more information!
