Part-Time Instructors
Funding
In CAS, part-time instruction funding is not base-budgeted at the department level.
Departments hire part-time instructors each semester and send the college business
officer a spreadsheet listing the instructor name, course number/section, cost, and
funding source for each section taught by a part-timer. The funding source may be
the college, the department, or extended programs. Departments must pay for part-time
instructors teaching on-line courses if the department is receiving on-line revenues
for those courses. The department also pays for part-timers hired to cover the teaching
duties of a full-time faculty member who has grant buyout.
The part-time budget for the college has been significantly reduced since the beginning
of the budget crisis in 2008. Departments are strongly encouraged to cover as many
courses as possible using full-time faculty and graduate teaching assistants before
hiring part-timers.
Hiring
Starting in January 2013, new part-time instructors will be hired on-line via workForum.
Go to the provost's website each semester for the current instructions on hiring processes.
Deadlines and procedures change from semester to semester. Do not save the forms or
instructions on your computer desktop--most likely they will be outdated by next semester.

Guidance for Part-time Instructors
CAS has developed a handbook for part-time instructors. Please direct your new part-timers
to this helpful guide at the beginning of the semester. This will help them acclimate
to the university and will supplement any training or orientation you do in your own
department.
