Description I
Each chair will be appointed for a fixed term, subject to renewal based upon the cumulative
annual evaluations and a more extensive evaluation during the last year of the term.The
evaluations, to be performed by the Dean, will include a review of several indicators
of performance while serving as a Department Chair/Program Director.
Indicators of vision, planning, and leadership as evidenced by articulation of the
departmental mission, goals, and objectives as compared to those of the College and
University.
- Indicators of achievement of goals and objectives as reflected in the department's
annual and long-term planning documents and most recent reports by external reviewers.
Included would be evidence of growth and development of the department/unit during
the evaluation period as demonstrated, through improvements and expansion of curricula
on- and off-campus, improved teaching efforts, increased scholarly activity and productivity,
increased external funding, enhanced commitment to University service and community
outreach and other relevant information.
- Indicators of individual goals and objectives of the Chair/Director, including administrative,
academic, scholarly, and service plans and achievements, as reflected in his/her planning
documents, instructional history, scholarly productivity, service commitments and
other relevant materials.
- Indicators of effectiveness in communicating with faculty, staff, students, the office
of the Dean, upper level administration, and the general public on matters pertaining
to personnel issues and crises, departmental needs and accomplishments, administrative
decisions, and general information.
Other measures might include the chair's effectiveness in enlisting support of department
personnel and administrators in meeting the needs of students and participating in
service activities for the College, University, and community.
- Indicators of effective management of operation as demonstrated by quality of staff
and faculty hires, ability to meet imposed deadlines, management of budget and personnel
matters, and effectiveness in implementing administrative directions and recommendations,
all within college and university requirements and guidelines.
