Description III If the Chair/Director is interested in continuing in his/her role, the Dean will perform a comprehensive review for the purpose of determining if the Chair/Director should be appointed for another term. The Dean will appoint an ad hoc reappointment and evaluation committee (REC) comprised of at least 10% of the faculty members within the Chair's Department. Under no circumstances, however, will committee membership be less than three, nor more than seven faculty members. The committee will be chaired by a tenured faculty member chosen by the Dean from an academic department external to the Chair's department. The faculty members of the department, using a procedure approved by both the Dean and the department's faculty, will select a portion of the committee and the Dean will appoint the remainder as follows: | No. on Committee | Appointed by Faculty | Appointed by Dean | | 3 | 2 | 1 | | 5 | 3 | 2 | | 7 | 4 | 3 | Though the members chosen by the faculty will normally come from within the department, the faculty may choose individuals external to the department or program. The Committee, regardless of size, should be representative of the academic areas within the department/program, as well as the ranks of the faculty within the department/program. During November of the evaluation year, the REC will survey the faculty of the department in a manner described in Section II-A. This survey, however, will be broader in scope than the annual survey and will be designed to determine the Chair's effectiveness since his/her initial appointment and will include written comments pertaining to reappointment. The Committee will compile and analyze its findings and forward a comprehensive report to the Dean. The REC Chair will retain the written comments during the review process and destroy them as soon as the report and been submitted to the Dean. The Dean will meet with the Chair/Director in January to discuss reappointment, using the REC report, the annual evaluations of the most recent term, reports by external reviewers, and other available information. The decision of the Dean regarding reappointment will include one of two options: to reappoint the current Chair/Director for a full term, or to initiate procedures for selection of a new Chair/Director. If the Chair/Director is not reappointed, the Dean may request that the Chair/Director continue until a new Chair/Director is appointed, or may appoint an Interim/Acting Chair Director until the search is completed.
