At the College of Communication and Fine Arts, every department, school and faculty
member is actively engaged in quality teaching, research or creative activity, as
well as responsible service.
When evaluating candidates for tenure and promotion, we look at how these areas are
naturally integrated into the candidate's professional profile. In a university community,
teaching, scholarship, and service are communal responsibilities. We look for a balance
between those areas, but acknowledge that the emphasis may vary at different stages
of one's academic career.
In addition, we consider the candidate's ability to interact appropriately with colleagues
and students. To assess the quality of performance we include feedback from students,
peers, administrators, and outside evaluators.
The Third-Year Review is the first part of the Tenure and Promotion procedure. Its
purpose is to help the candidate by assessing the teaching, service, and research
or creative activity to indicate areas for growth and improvement.
Before preparing the Tenure and Promotion dossier, each candidate should review the
school or department's as well as the University's Tenure and Promotion policies.
