Erica Glover Edwards, U of M undergraduate student in art education, is the first recipient of the University of Memphis Donalyn Heise Art Education Leadership Award, established by Donalyn Heise, associate professor of art education at the University of Memphis, this year. The award recognizes an art education major that has demonstrated commitment to the profession through outstanding service and leadership, and understands the role of quality arts education in transforming the lives of individuals and community.
"Erica is a natural teacher, nurturing, professional, visionary, competent in the processes and content of arts education, who wants to make a difference through quality arts education," Heise says.

This past semester, Edwards participated in the art department's alternative arts practicum at Martha's Manor, and adult day center for mentally challenged women in Memphis. Noticing that one of her students needed a pair of glasses, she convinced her boss at Eclectic Eye, a Memphis eyewear boutique, to perform a free exam, while Edwards herself paid for a new pair of glasses. "Erica always goes above and beyond to do quality work," Heise notes.
