Dr. Ricardo Taborda – New Faculty Member in the Area of Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering

Dr. R. TabordaDr. Ricardo Taborda is an Assistant Professor in the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) at the University of Memphis, with a joint appointment in the Department of Civil Engineering.  Dr. Taborda joined the University of Memphis after working as a post doctoral researcher in the Computational Seismology Laboratory and the Quake Group at Carnegie Mellon University. Ricardo collaborates in various projects with the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC). He is a member of SCEC's Community Modeling Environment Group since 2005. Dr. Taborda has a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from EAFIT University (Medellín, Colombia, 2000), a M.Sc. in Structural Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, 2003), a M.Sc. in Structural Mechanics from the University of Southern California (USC, 2005), and received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 2010. His research combines problems in seismology, earthquake engineering, and simulation using parallel supercomputing applications, oriented at assessing the impact of strong earthquakes in urban regions, including the interaction of the ground motion with the built environment (soil-structure and site-city interaction effects). He also has research experience on system identification techniques, structural health monitoring, and analysis of strong motion records from instrumented buildings for damage detection and characterization of structural nonlinear effects during earthquakes.
