Dr. Richard James, Ph. D. is a Crader Professor of Education. He has been a professor at the University of
Memphis for 35 years. Prior to that he
was a school counselor and Title III
E.S.E.A. nationally validated innovative
education program coordinator in
Mattoon, Illinois for seven years. He received his Bachelor’s in English in 1964 and Master’s in Counseling
1966 from Eastern Illinois University and Ph. D. in counseling psychology from Indiana State University in 1974. He has authored textbooks in theories of counseling and crisis
intervention. His crisis intervention
strategies book has sold over 100
thousand copies and been translated into
Korean and Chinese. He is one of the founders of the Memphis Police Department’s
model for training police officers to do
crisis intervention with the mentally ill.
That model is now used in over 2400 police jurisdictions in the United
States and in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom. and Sweden.
