The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit and The University of Memphis will host its 5th annual Beale Street Drill Meet and Endurance Challenge competition. Other ROTC units from coast to coast will travel to compete and represent all four branches of the military. The drill events will take place on Memorial Field or in front of the Library, and the endurance challenge will take place at Shelby Farms Park. Event description Hattiloo Theatre, a Black repertory theatre group in Memphis, TN, in conjunction with the Hooks Institute, presents the story of Benjamin L. Hooks, as told by Hooks himself. Hooks will describe Black life in Memphis shortly after slavery; during the heyday of Beale Street; black life in segregated Memphis; his service during World War II; his rise as a central figure in the American Civil Rights Movement; and his shaping of national policy through his work as the Executive Director of the NAACP, and as a United States Federal Communications Commissioner. The Hooks Institute, in conjunction with Memphis City Schools, is hosting the Tiger Blue Carpet Event, which is a public showing of Duty of the Hour, the documentary on Ben Hooks, to 10th graders in Memphis City Schools. To provide context for the documentary, MCS will administer a speech writing competition where students will research Hooks's life to identify examples from his life showing how Hooks persevered to overcome some difficulty, and provide examples from the students own life to show, like Hooks's example, how the student persevered to overcome some difficulty. Essays will be chosen by MCS staff using the Tennessee Department of Education rubic for scoring Authors of the three winning essays will each receive an IPad, courtesy of the Hooks Institute.
