The Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis, in collaboration with the CI
Headquarter in China, will sponsor American high school students for a Chinese Bridge
Summer Camp in 2010. The CIUM hold 50 - 60 positions for Tennessee students. This
trip is truly a chance of a lifetime opportunities for students!
All the expenses in China will be covered by the Confucius Institute.
Students and teachers (chaperons) only need to pay their own international airfare
and international travel insurance.
During the program, students will be studying Chinese language and culture (such as
calligraphy, brush painting, time-honored paper cutting, tea ceremonies, martial arts,
etc.) in traditional classrooms, and participating in various sports and cultural
activities (basketball friendly match, international students get-together, host family
experiences, etc.); they will also be experiencing various points of interest of China's
long history, and viewing sites of natural beauty.
Timing:
July 15 (Wednesday) – July 31 (Friday), 2010
We will depart the U.S. on July 14 and arrive in China on July 15 and head back to
the U.S. on July 31.
The application deadline is March 15.

- Will there be an informational meeting for parents?
- There will be pre-trip training in June for students and parents.
- How much money should I send with my child?
- It depends on how much each student plans on spending on souvenirs. We suggest $200
to $300.
- Can students travel with their laptops and cell phones?
- Students can bring their laptops and cell phones. We are not sure whether there is
wireless Internet in the rooms where students will be residing. We are checking with
the HANBAN (Headquarters).
- What is the best international rates for cell calls?
- Just a reminder, the international telephone calls are very costly. We suggest communicating
via Sight Speed, Skype, or through e-mail. Please remember there will be a thirteen
(13) hour time difference.
- Can you tell me more about the currency conversion from U.S. dollars to RMB?
- Students can exchange the money in the bank either in US, London, or China.
- What is the student/teacher ratio?
- 1:9
- When will we have a detailed itinerary?
- Before June
- Will my child be staying in a dorm or hotel? Do I need to send linens, towels, and
sheets?
- We will let you know later when the itinerary is finalized. It is not necessary for
students to bring linens, towels, or sheets.
- Can you tell me a little more about a passport versus a visa and how to start the
process?
- We will notify the applicants regarding the details of registering for a visa. Applicants
must have a valid passport.
