January 2012

  • 01/24, 10AM-2PM, University Center Ballroom, Study Abroad Fair. Students are invited to stop by to learn more about semester, academic year and summer programs available at over 250 institutions in 50 countries. Faculty and past program participants will be on hand to discuss options available. All students who attend will also have a chance to win one of three $1,000 scholarships toward a U of M-sponsored study abroad program. February 2012

  • 02/15, 11AM, 207 McCord Hall, CJSA General Meeting
  • 02/17, 10AM-2PM, UC Shelby Room, Do the Write Thing Essay Contest, Several volunteers are needed to help review essays written by Memphis and Shelby County middle school students. Students were asked to provide written responses to three questions:  How has youth violence affected my life?  What are the causes of youth violence?  What can I do about youth violence?  Please help in this worthy cause.  An opportunity like this could have a huge impact on a kid's life. This is a great opportunity to meet most of the county leaders in criminal justice and to add a line to your resume.  We need your help on February 10, please Click here to volunteer!   • 02/17, Last day to apply for the Summer Research Initiative at the University of Maryland, College Park.  This is a fantastic opportunity.  Students who are selected will receive round-trip air fare, room and board in University on-campus housing and a stipend of $2,700 (before taxes).  Click here for application materials.
  • 2/20,  Last day to RSVP for the Annual Executive Round Table & Student Day for the Institute of Internal Auditors Memphis Chapter on 2/29. See below for details.
  • 02/25, 10AM-3PM, Middle Tennessee State University, Student Conference on the Death Penalty. High school and college students from around Tennessee are invited to attend this free conference to learn about the death penalty system and how students can affect change.  Register for free at: www.tennesseedeathpenalty.org and receive a free t-shirt.  Registration is not required for attendance but is highly recommended.
  • 02/29, 2-5PM, Holiday Inn, University of Memphis, Annual Executive Round Table & Student Day, The Institute of Internal Auditors Memphis Chapter, Free event for students.  $2,000 in student scholarships will be given away. This event will include an open panel discussion by local Audit Professionals and a presentation by the U.S. Secret Service on combatting financial and computer crime. Students must RSVP by 2/20.  Send an e-mail to Mike Slater at mike.slater@memphis.edu.

March 2012

  • 03/17, 8:30AM-4:30PM, 124 Ball Hall, Fingerprint Identification and Classification Clinic.  This is an eight-hour training event to learn about fingerprint procedures.  Space is limited to 50 participants.  A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of the training.  Students with higher GPA's will be given preference.  Sign-up here!

  • Auxiliary Probation Service, Juvenile Court Memphis, Provide hands on supervision of Juveniles on probation in Memphis and Shelby County. Use this opportunity to help build your resume and learn valuable skills doing work that will make a difference in the life of a child. Click here to send Dr. Pitts an e-mail to learn more.
  • Court Observations: Observe a hearing at Shelby County District Court.This opportunity is available weekly. Let me know if there is a special type of case you would like to observe or if you would like to see the docket schedule for criminal court. I usually receive the schedule on Fridays for the following week. Click here to visit Shelby County District Court.
  • GRASSY - Gang Reduction Assistance and Saving Society's Youth: The Lodestar Program. The GRASSY Lodestar Program is a gang intervention mentoring program in Trezevant and Frayser High Schools. The program is a component of the OJJDP Comprehensive Gang Model. Each mentor will receive certificates from the Shelby County District Attorney's Office and the MCS Office of Gang Awareness.  Lodestar mentors should have a desire and genuine concern for high risk gang related students.  Click here to send Dr. Pitts an e-mail to learn more.
  • LifeLine to Success - A group of ex-offenders, organized by Pastor DeAndre Brown, is working to fight blight and restore people's lives in Frayser.  Volunteer opportunities are available almost every Friday.  Like their Facebook page by clicking here. We'll be partnering with them on several up-coming events.
  • Lock-up-and-Learn: Every week there are opportunities to get a one-on-one look at the Penal Farm or the jail facility at 201 Poplar.Many students rank this among their most positive experiences outside of class. Regardless of your career goals, you should do this! Lock-up-and-Learn at 201 Poplar occurs every Tuesday from 3-6PM and the Lock-up-and-Learn at the Penal Farm happens every Wednesday from 10AM-1PM.
  • Ridin' with MPD This program is designed for juniors and seniors intending to pursue careers in law enforcement. You must clear a rigorous background check and be pre-approved by the faculty advisor. Click here to sign up!
  • TRACS - Truancy Reduction Action Coalition for Students: We have a partnership with the Shelby County District Attorney's Office to recruit and train mentors to work with truant middle school students in Memphis City Schools.  Click here to learn more.
