A Masters Degree in Communication from The University of Memphis prepares students
to be successful in the many professional opportunities that exist for those who study
communication, and to be successful in pursuing a doctoral or other terminal degree
in the field of Communication. Students have a choice of two concentrations: (1) Communication
and (2) Film and Video Production.
Communication Concentration
The concentration in Communication provides students with a fundamental grounding
in communication theory and rhetorical theory, and then is tailored to meet the needs
and interests of individual students. Specific areas of faculty expertise include:
Health Communication, Instructional & Intercultural Communication, Rhetorical Theory
and Criticism, Public Address; Rhetoric of Science & Medicine; Communication & Technology;
Political Communication.
Film and Video Production Concentration
The concentration in Film and Video Production combines technical instruction with
courses in both motion picture and traditional communication studies to provide students
with the tools and concepts necessary to function in the multifaceted world of audiovisual
production. The approach to media practice is broad enough to address the needs of
independent media artists, as well as those who seek to enter the industry. Specific
areas of faculty expertise and/or courses include, among others: Commercial Film and
Video, Documentary Film and Video, Narrative Film and Video.
