About

Adam G. Hughes is a rhetoric & media studies Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Communication and serves as Graduate Assistant Director of the university's Center for Writing and Communication. Mr. Hughes's dissertation project, under the guidance of advisor Dr. Antonio de Velasco, will examine the public rhetorics surrounding three examples of technological innovation: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Amazon's Echo device running the Alexa operating system, and Waymo's autonomous driving technology (formerly known as the Google Self-Driving Car Project). Additional ongoing projects include examination of rhetorical ironies in Sinclair Lewis's criticism of textile mill labor treatment and analysis of Muna Lee's constitutive rhetoric promoting Pan-American Feminism. After finishing his Ph.D., Mr. Hughes aims to serve in a faculty role at a public university, work to improve the efficacy of basic COMM courses for students outside the discipline, and continue studying discourses of technological, global, and class change.
