Career Encounters
Career Encounters: The Opportunity to Explore Career Fields from the Inside

Career Encounters links the University of Memphis students to the greater Memphis business area with the opportunity for career exploration before graduation.  The purpose of Career Encounters is to arrange a site-visit with a professional who is currently working in a career that is of interest to the student.  Following procedures outlined by the Career and Psychological Counseling Center, the program has been designed with the goal of promoting early career exploration for all students.

A Career Encounter is open to any full-time or part-time student currently enrolled at the University of Memphis.  After a brief interview with a career counselor outlining the kind of experience desired, the student is given the Career Encounters Guidelines to follow.  The student profits from an onsite visit in many ways: realizing the relationship between academic coursework and the career, examining preconceived notions about the career, and understanding how the career influences a person's total lifestyle.  In addition, such an encounter can lead to a potential internship and even a future career.

A SPONSOR may be an alumnus or any "friend" of the University of Memphis, who has an interest in helping students explore careers.  When a student expresses interest in a particular occupation, the student is referred to an appropriate sponsor.  The SPONSOR is asked to spend an allotted amount of time providing the student with exposure to a career area.  On the day of the visit, the sponsor may want to arrange for the student to participate in the following: tour the facility, discuss the career with other staff members, attend staff or committee meetings, and peruse reports, manuals, and other literature.  With sponsor approval, any interested employee at the sponsor site can serve as a potential host. Sponsors receive satisfaction from providing a service to students who would otherwise have difficulty finding guidance in specific fields.

For more information, please contact a Career Encounters representative at 901-678-2067 from 9am to 1pm.
